It was a rainy Saturday this past weekend but it did not stop us from trekking out to Venice’s Abbot Kinney to A+R, where we had the chance to Test Drive one of their newest products: Pentax and Marc Newson’s K-01 Digital Camera.
We along with a handful of people who stopped into the shop got to use the cameras first hand, which saw designer Marc Newson and camera manufacturer Pentax meeting to create the K-01, an intersection of “high technology and high design.” The camera comes in a black, white, and yellow versions, all very sleek and simple and beautiful.
The camera is shockingly easy to use, one of those cameras that turns any user–even the most basic user–into a professional photographer: it’s a camera that definitely would scare photographers, concerned that their profession is in jeopardy. This speaks to how great Pentax is, as you can aim at nearly anything and get a perfect picture. You can do this with automatic settings, change the settings to whatever you like, and/or play inside of various modes on the camera, ranging from a pet mode to night mode to stage lighting mode.
The camera is super sexy and just about perfect, thanks to Newson’s design. One of the craziest features on the camera is that it has the “40mm Pancake Lens,” which is the world’s slimmest lens. The camera can also allows you to switch out your other Pentax lenses onto it, swapping out the hyper thin Pancake for something geared toward different performance styles. We would have loved to have been able to play with it around the ‘hood as everyone wanted to do at the Test Drive but the rain did not allow for that. We did get to show the rain who was boss though, by capturing the store candidly and impressing ourselves with just how professional things turned out. Take a look at some of the shots below and you can pick up the camera from A+R here. We highly recommend it and recommend you stop into A+R and see it, who will likely have another event in the near future to showcase just how rad the camera is.
