The Hollywood And Highland Character Count: March 23

As a means by which to chronicle what is going on in the American cultural zeitgeist and how we cater to that, Los Angeles, I’m Yours is kicking off a new bi-monthly feature: The Hollywood And Highland Character Count. Every other Friday, we’ll share who the performers are that are clogging the Hollywood and Highland sidewalks and see how they change and shift in relationship to what is happening in the entertainment world. We’ll make predictions, keep count of who stays and goes, and log just what is happening at the best microcosm of what is on the world’s mind: Hollywood and Highland.

Today was particularly packed out on Hollywood and Highland because of the weather being so nice, which was definitely a great reason to be outside. A lot of the performers were just standing there, not really doing anything (and, frankly, no one gave a shit about most of them so it is understandable that they were just doing nothing). The log below is the result of walking a loop from Hollywood and Orange to Hollywood and Las Palmas, which we walked twice to make sure that we caught every performer on the drag. We were expecting a little more excitement; however, we did get to see some “exciting” things, like a Jonny Depp character convention and not one but TWO Darth Vaders without their helmets on. (We only photographed one, which is below.)

The Hollywood And Highland Character Count: March 23

  • A “Gypsy Woman” acting as African American Zorro’s sidekick.

  • Characters At Madame Tussaud: I Love Lucy Lucille Ball and Shrek at Hollywood and Orange location. Snoop Dogg’s wax figure was outside of the Hollywood & Highland Metro.
  • Two Guitarists, a male and female, who were singing about babies.
  • A man selling hand drawn 420 art.
  • Snap Boogie of America’s Got Talent, dancing for a large audience. (Note: I only know that it was him as I worked on the show last summer and went, “Oh: that’s Snap Boogie!” Don’t believe me? Watch this and then relook at the photo.)
  • There were two guys sitting on paint buckets. I’m assuming they were some sort of drumming duo?
  • There was a man making balloon animals for kids in a very, very dirty costume.

    Observations

  • All of the Jonny Depp characters seem to hang out with each other, which is how I realized, “Oh: so many Jonny Depp characters.”
  • The “scary” characters like Michael Myers, Predator, and Jason Voorhees also all hang out with each other and try to scare people who only look like they shop at Hot Topic.
  • …and Cookie Monster was also with them. Maybe because he was comfortable there because he is a monster?
  • The guys who ask you, “Do you like hip hop?” and try to hand you a CD now try to hand you DVDs!
  • There was a surprising lack of people exiting or entering from the Metro, both times we passed. However, lots of people were waiting for the bus!
  • Surprisingly, only Superman (above) was the only performer that crossed over from Imposters. I suppose the rest are now working full time as screenwriters?
  • Awards

  • Most Creative: Guy dressed as Old School Teen Wolf
  • Most In Need Of A Makeover: Batgirl. Girl looked a mess.
  • Most Popular: Snap Boogie. He always had a crowd around him. However, Bumblebee was the most popular costumed character.
  • Least Popular: Cookie Monster, Scrappy Doo, and Old School Teen Wolf
  • Surprised We Did Not See…

  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Freddy Kreuger
  • Chucky of Child’s Play
  • Edward Cullen or Bella Whatever from Twilight
  • Harry Potter
  • The Lorax
  • Character Predictions And Questions Over Next Two Weeks

  • Jennifer Lawrence’s Character from The Hunger Games
  • Julia Roberts’ Character from Mirror, Mirror
