We’d been meaning to share something from Beverly Hills’ Pay Dirt Pictures for some time since they are a local group of directors and artists who are just making the best stuff out there: nearly every video they touch turns to viral. The work of their director Lorenzo Fonda stuck out, his work familiar and funny and just really great. We were going to share the new music video he directed for Scissor Sisters but then opted not to. Then, we wanted to share his short series of little films, Short Films About Life, but then didn’t. We even thought to share his immensely popular Ten Things I Learned About The Sea, but opted not to.
Then, we discovered his sketchbooks and drawings, which seems to be the groundwork for all of his video work, a place where he can do some really crazy, funny shit through his drawings. That, we felt, was best to share.
There are three sketchbooks you can flip through on his website: the first, which has the cover from the film The Science Of Sleep; the second, which looks like a paper bag; and the third, which has a fortune from a cookie on it. Each has a different personality and style and depict these comical worlds of scenes like hipsters crashing into each other as a result of too many iPods, a character masturbating and getting bored with it, and even a mermaid making out with a guy who just got cement shoed. They’re all these fun and fantastic little worlds he creates that will certainly make you laugh at loud at a few points.
Our favorite was the colorful and detailed second sketchbook, which just seems like the craziest of the all (or, at least, the most imaginative). They’re all really great and should be a fun late Friday afternoon visual treat for you. And, if you want more, you can always buy a print of his from the Pay Dirt webshop.
