Beautiful Losers Keepers
Aaron Rose is having a fire sale! Hurry on over to Known Gallery on Fairfax to check out this artist/curator/writer/director’s assortment of “1990s memories” including art, prints, posters, photographs, graffiti zines, art books, t-shirts, sneakers, skateboards, basically anything and everything. The impressive yet accessibly priced collection from Rose’s Alleged Gallery days in New York City includes works by Mike Mills, Ed Templeton, Mark Gonzales, Barry McGee, Mister Cartoon, Geoff McFetridge, Thomas Campbell, Chris Johanson, Mark Borthwick, Sonic Youth, Raymond Pettibon, Terry Richardson and so many more.
The opening last week drew lines around the block, but don’t worry, Rose restocks the show frequently so it’s still worth going to now and also a few days from now. Apparently Rose had been saving all these works in a storage unit in Glendale for over a decade. When Known Gallery asked him to curate a show he realized a perfect way to let collectors and fans enjoy items that were otherwise lost to the public. All proceeds from the sale goes to Rose’s charity Make Something! which matches young aspiring artists with mentors in their field.
I was happy to see teenage skate kids checking out the show. Were they also checking out the Mark Gonzales drawings for just $10? Do they even know who he is? Perhaps they were drawn in by the decks but came away with a little more knowledge about the origins of street art, the Beautiful Losers and a time when graffiti (and skating, for that matter) was a subversive form. I was checking out a Geoff McFetridge painting when two young skaters were leaving the gallery. One stopped the other in the near empty gallery and said, “hey, we have to go the other way, it says “IN.” OK, skaters that politely follow instructions? Maybe we still have some work to do…
