Sylvita’s Killer Animals
Time for some nerding out over horror films, guys. Sylvia Lopez–AKA Sylvita–is a Los Angeles artist, illustrator, and crafty woman. She has a versatile body of work, many of them meditations on nature and animals. While those pieces are nice, we found her Society6 store and were very much obsessed with a series of little paintings she did of cute animals juxtaposed with some of the most nefarious figures in horror. What a brilliant mashing!
There are three (that we know of), which take dream stalker Freddy Kreuger, the possessed Regan MacNeil of The Exorcist, and–my favorite–killer toy doll Chucky and fuses them with nearly the opposite animal of them. You have Freddy and an owl making “Freddowlet.” There’s Regan and a Rabbit making “The Exorrabit.” Chucky and a kitten become “Chuckitty.” Simple, funny, and well done, each piece sees these characters in a 1960s style portrait, the figures in front of little patches of color as they hold a bloody knife or as they dislocate their own neck.
They’re weird combinations and are definitely not everyone’s favorite subject matter. There is a great fantasy to them that is likable that, perhaps, in some alternate universe of animal/human hybrids, these figures could be real. How hysterical would that be? Maybe it’s only funny to me. For more on Slyvita, check out her Tumblr and you can buy these pieces here.
