Nan Lawson’s Cute Cultural Icons
Nan Lawson is a Silver Lake based illustrator known for making quirky, nerdy illustrations. As she says on her website, her work is inspired by “hipsters, cult television shows, and flea markets,” all of which manifest themselves obviously in her work. One thing that isn’t? Her mild obsession with popular culture figures.
Nan has a very distinctive, cute style. She makes lean, round faced, blushing men and women who always appear to be mid-blink. They do look like “hipsters,” too. What is most interesting is where she pulls cultural cues from for her subjects. As you can see at the top, she made a little illustration of Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus, a very unlikely of person for such a “cute” artist to draw. Similarly, you can see that Nick Offerman’s Ron Swanson and Han Solo get the cute treatment.
Nan is a big sci-fi, comedy nerd, which is a total surprise considering we were expecting to just see very Daily Candy-esque illustrations of women and small dogs. Thus, these pieces stood out to us as they portray subjects that we would not have assumed would be within her field of interest. Who knew?!
