When we started LAIY last year, one of our first “big posts” was on young, local rising artist Bendow. The artist (real name: Ben Waldow) grew up in Los Angeles and currently is based in Chicago, where he currently is attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We periodically heard updates on him and his work and were pleasantly surprised to hear that he gave the Downtown Standard’s mural space a new paint job this month. Yesterday we (finally) had the chance to swing by to see the piece and it is a sunny, Summery piece of public art.
The mural is yellow with white accents on a black background. It curls and it spikes and it forms a community of Bendow’s often sharp toothed, big eyed, and serpentine characters. There is a lot to take in as he layers details over details in the mural recalling a similar understanding of art and figures that Steven Harrington has. It is a nice addition to the area, complimented by the rich green bamboo leaves that peek out over the mural wall, pale buildings that surround it, and clear blue skies above. There couldn’t have been a better mural The Standard could have picked for Summer!
What was most surprising about this mural is that LAIY had a small hand in its being made. According to a Beverly Hills Patch article which was reaffirmed by The Standard’s own blog, Bendow’s work was found on our site and hooked the hotel’s interest. How crazy is that?? Stories like this are exactly why we run this website: to celebrate local art and culture makers and share their hard work with the world. Encountering Bendow’s art nearly a year later also made it very noticeable how much his aesthetic has condensed and matured becoming more and more detailed. The mural is a great celebration of his work.
For those unfamiliar, the hotel’s mural space is located Downtown on their 6th Street side of the building just West of Flower. It is located right before the parking lot entrance and faces the street. It will be up through the end of August and cannot be missed. Stop by and see it if you are Downtown!
