A Few Late Summer Cocktails

Late-Summer-Cocktails

Summer is ending! With Labor Day approaching and lots of drinks behind us, what were a few standouts and trends we noticed being served around town? A bunch! The city is mostly reinventing classics (which we have been doing for years), infusing the intelligence of mixology into old classics. If you don’t want to go out or have some extra booze lying around, we have a few late Summer cocktails for you to make. Enjoy while barbecuing this weekend!

Gold Rush
Where You Can Find It: Mozza, Palihouse, Son of a Gun, The Varnish, Cliff’s Edge
Taste: A sweet take on bourbon.
Recipe:
• 2 parts bourbon (2 ounces)
• 1 parts honey syrup (1 ounce)
• Juice of a quarter lemon
Shake and serve over ice. Garnish with lemon twist if you are feeling fancy.

Classic Daiquiri
Where You Can Find It: Perch, La Descarga, Library Bar, Hungry Cat, Pour Vous, Tasting Kitchen
Taste: Sweet, simplified take on the rum classic.
Recipe:
• 2 ounces white rum
• 1 teaspoon fine sugar
• Juice of half a lemon or lime
Shake well and serve over ice.

Rosé
Where You Can Find It: Everywhere. Notable places: L&E Oyster Bar, Hungry Cat, AXE, Gjelina, Mozza–everywhere!!
Taste: A light crisp wine perfect for hot weather and better than sweet white wines.
Recipe:
• Go to a super market
• Buy a Rosé
• We recommend Le Ville Firme (cheap and good; found at Ralph’s), La Ferme Julien (cheap and good; found at Trader Joe’s), Domaine Houchart Rhone Blend (expensive, hard to find, but great; found at L&E), Bastianich Rosato (slightly expensive, light, good; found at Mozza), and Frv 100 (affordable, crisp, and ~*~sPaRkLiNg~*~; found at Mel & Rose).

Pimm’s Cup
Where You Can Find It: Palihouse, Next Door, Edendale, Eveleigh
Taste: Refreshing, fruity Summer drink from England.
Recipe:
• 2 ounces Pimm’s No. 1
• 4 ounces ginger beer
• Lemon
• Cucumber
Muddle cucumber and lemon in glass. Add in ginger beer and Pimm’s. Stir! You may want to have friends over or really like Pimm’s since you have to buy a whole bottle of it.

Negroni
Where You Can Find It: Hatfield’s, Sotto, Terroni, Little Dom’s, Tasting Kitchen
Taste: A nice way to make your Campari shine. (Side note: lots of people are using Campari in cool ways. For example, Playa is using it with beer for their Beer And A Ball cocktail.)
Recipe:
• 1 ounce Campari
• 1 ounce sweet vermouth (or sweet rosé, if you have it)
• 1 ounce gin (dry!)
Stir together ingredients with ice. You technically should serve it on new ice but, hey, no one will judge you if you don’t. Garnish with orange twist if you are fancy.

Mojito
Where You Can Find It: La Descarga, Any SBE Establishment
Taste: The mint and rum drink perfect for hot days.
Recipe:
• 2 ounces white rum
• 4 ounces simple syrup (or Sprite/7Up if you are lazy or champagne if you are naughty)
• Mint leaves
• Lime
Muddle lime and mint in a high ball glass. Add ice and pour rum and syrup/soda/champs over it. Stir, drink, enjoy.

A Pisco Drink
Where You Can Find It: Picca, Bäco Mercat, Wood & Vine, Mo-Chica
Taste: The best friend of mezcal, this is another trendy drink base from Peru. The Pisco Sour is a classic.
Recipe:
• 3 ounces pisco
• 1 ounce lime juice
• 1 ounce simple syrup
• Egg white
• Bitters
Mix ingredients, saving egg whites for last to be included. Shake and serve up. Garnish with a drop of bitters.
