Hellen (yes, with two Ls) Jo is a Burbank based illustrator with a very specific voice. She’s part punkrock, part anime, part popular culture, part hipster humorist, and part classic cartoonist. She has a very large range in her illustrations but they all carry the same tone to them: they are all hardcore, sometimes silly, refined rough art pieces.
Hellen seems like the type of girl who could throw a punch and knock you out. From the tiny copyright qualifier “don’t steal shit” on her website to how she exaggerates her name to Helllllen, she emits a fun and rowdy persona. This very clearly is present in her work, as you can gather from the girls mid-Satanic ritual in the top piece and from the blood on the girls in the piece below it. They’re wonderfully brutal and feel a lot like Cleon Peterson‘s work but from the angle of a young woman. That is a great point of view.
She has a great variety too and isn’t confined to one means of expression. She’s a pretty active zine maker and even did a little wallet for Poketo. We really dig her work and were super pumped to stumble upon it. Check out more of it here and buy some of her products here. It also should be noted that Lady Gaga is the subject of a lot of her work.
