Cayucas’ “Cayucos”
Cayucas are a new band on Secretly Canadian that we have a feeling are going to be blowing up pretty soon. They’re this new era California rock group from Santa Monica’s Zach Yudin that pretty much have beachiness embedded into everything about them even though they just released their first SC 7″. With songs like “Swimsuit” and a name like “Cayucas,” you know they’re going to be bringing California Summer rock back in a pretty big way. Their new single of almost-the-same-name-as-them “Cayucos” is sure to be a warm Autumnal treat (which is what we in LA are experiencing now).
For those unfamiliar, Cayucos is a surf town in San Luis Obispo County. The name comes from the Chumash word for “kayak” or “canoe” and the area was big for fishing (this is all from Wikipedia, of course). We’re not sure what the relationship of the band is to the town but the song is definitely very, “Let’s take a romantic road trip up the One to Cayucos so we can frolic around on the beach!” The feeling is very dreamy and happy and the music video is an appropriately golden beach romp. Yudin knows how to orchestrate a pop landscape of head nodding drums and moody vocals. Everything about the song is catchy, from the way he verbalizes “Cay – yu – cos” to the breaks for cascading “woooos.” This is all aided by a casual guitar strum and punctuating drum beats that practically cue you to clap along.
You can catch the song below, which’ll be a good soundtrack for a sunny not-Summer afternoon. Thankfully, it’s always Summer in Los Angeles. For the rest of the world? They’ll to take the guys of Cayucas’ upbeat word as cause for toe tapping and warm weather dreaming in October. Catch more on Cayucas on their Twitter and Facebook, too.
