Bad news, Los Angeles men: the brand new J.Crew mens store in The Grove has opened and a lot of your money is going to end up there. It’s inescapable because it is just so great. It’s big, there is a lot to choose from, there is not a sale section, and you will be able to get all the nice clothes you want. This is bad for all of our wallets.
The store is in the previous PacSun space which has been transformed from a tweeny, mall-ish beach zone to a very adult, woody men’s shopping destination. The space is a long hall of clothes and mannequins and people dressed sharply hoping to help you. It’s a far cry from the sometimes stuffy upstairs of the former J.Crew space, which has now been converted to an entirely women’s store (photo at bottom).
We’ve always felt like there is a bit of a gap in LA menswear and mens shopping but with the ushering in of a J.Crew men’s store and all those great men’s outfitters on Abbot Kinney, maybe our luck is changing. This store is a great example of a fairly large brand doing new and exciting things for men–and the same can be said for the Gap store just a few storefronts down which keeps getting better and better as they now sell Hyden Yoo, Comune, Shades of Grey, and more great brands. This store isn’t revolutionary by any means and it isn’t nearly as brilliant as the J.Crew Liquor Store. That said, this still means something.
Perhaps LA is finally getting its due for men? Perhaps men are just getting more attention now? We’ll see. Regardless, along with the Michael Kors store, the way too hyped Sprinkles, and the upcoming Topshop, we may all need to kick our shame surrounding going to The Grove because there are actually a lot of appealing shopping spots there (despite it being a tourist destination). The J.Crew Men’s Store is open now and would be a great place buying holiday gifts for your man (or yourself).
