So many times when researching people’s work to share and local talents that we want to suport on LAIY, we often find their work hosted to strange or notoriously bad websites that are in no way helping them get their work into the world. In fact, it’s making all people who encounter their work super, super frustrated since their websites can be so damn bad. Unless it’s on Cargo Collective or Tumblr, things can get a little tricky. Former LAIY cover boy Amir H. Fallah had a similar feeling, which we chatted about that with him briefly when we interviewed him a few months ago. What was his solution? Team up with some people to make a website building app to help creatives have websites that are super attractive and super modern. The result is Made With Color.
The concept is super easy, which is the entire point: without coding or contracts and with easy usability and customizability, artists (and more) can create websites that require little of them and result in a really nice looking site. It’s an effort to help you help yourself since lots and lots of us have no idea how to make a website and, if we do, we have no idea how to make it look pretty. “At Beautiful/Decay, we sift through thousands of website submissions,” Amir noted in an email. “We’d come upon hard to navigate or cluttered sites and realized there was a need something like Made With Color. People visiting a site have a short attention span so it shouldn’t take more than a click or two to start viewing the work on a person’s site.” We totally agree: we run into the same problems with submissions and in our search. There are lots of people we haven’t shared specifically because their websites suck. We’re sure you’ve had similar problems, too.
If anyone is qualified to guide a project like this, it is definitely Amir: he plays both the role of art scout and artist and he understands how both worlds work. It took a mind like this to think up MWC. “Being both an editor of an art and design publication and a fine artist gave me a unique perspective,” he says. “I know what editors, galleries and curators want to see and I know what features artists need to make a great website. Made With Color was created as a response to those things. We wanted to make a DIY website building platform that was easy enough for a web novice and had an intuitive design at an affordable price.”
“Our goal is to help artists, designers, musicians and creative businesses have beautiful websites that will put their creativity at the forefront while making the website viewing experience a pleasant one,” he finishes. We don’t doubt that this will be super helpful and, to add to getting you a better website, Amir even offered up a super rad discount for LAIY readers: you can get 29% off your first year at Made With Color by using the discount code laimyours. It is all lowercase and the offer is valid through the end of 2013. How great is that?!
