Are homemade jams the answer to the East coast’s artisanal chocolate trend? Perhaps. With SQIRL exploding and canning classes totally being a thing, we would assume that jamming and canning and using fruit we find in Southern California in new ways to totally be “our thing.” Anyway, Jam On It is a new enty into the jam/can/fruit fan category that we caught wind of over holiday break at Silver Lake’s ReForm School. With such a cute hand written package, we had to give it a go.

We thought we were doing a good job keeping tabs on Eddie Ruscha’s Secret Circuit. Well, we dropped the ball because he released a full LP–Tropical Psychedlics–with London’s Emotional Response in August of last year. We didn’t realize this until the album was Pitchfork’d last Friday, which meant we needed to hustle to get our hands on the album. How is it? It is a step back from Eddie’s usually thick, thick, thick abstract house and is instead a slightly more approachable version of his electronic point of view placed in an island context.

We like making New Year’s resolutions. We do! They’re fun ways to challenge yourself and to make an effort to change your life in small ways. They’re good and healthy and fun. We have many for ourselves and, because we love you all so much, we have some challenges for you. Winter cleaning always means unexpected gifts of things you forgot you owned. While going through a stack of books, trying to figure out what was garbage and what was not, a curious item popped up: a thick black-and-white magazine with bold visuals and a decidedly abstract approach to displaying information. It was confusing and attractive and did not attempt to align itself with anything else but itself. It is a very powerful individual statement that I could not trace to anything. I assumed it was a gift or maybe something I picked up from a book store–but it was just so alien. Then–Aha!–a postcard with a familiar flower poked out of it: this must be from the odd and enveloping Lost (In LA) show that is currently on view at Barnsdall.

Somehow we were not expecting to see so many neat new calendars released for 2013. Why is this surprising?? It’s a new year! This always happens! Yesterday we got a note from the guys who run local queer zine JIMMY that they have a calendar shot by Daniel Trese and features Ryan Heffington and his Lady Boys. While we’ve shared letterpressed and minimal time counters, JIMMY has a sexy, artsy means for you to keep track of 2013.
